How the WS5 headphones run the XP DEUS
XP's WS5 is a full cup wireless headset for the DEUS, designed to fit comfortably over your ears and isolate outside noise. It has its own tuning interface with Target ID, folds for storage, weighs 255 g, and XP rates it showerproof and rainproof. In XP's DEUS-22X35WS5 pack the WS5 is the control unit, so the S-Telescopic Lite stem carries only the coil.
The 9 inch X35 coil
The 9 inch (22.5 cm) X35 coil, XP reference D01X35, runs 35 frequencies from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz, weighs 345 g (12.2 oz) with coil cover and carries its own battery, rated at about 15 hours depending on frequency and power. XP rates it fully waterproof up to 6 meters (20 feet), and it fits the XP DEUS and the XP ORX.
XP's X35 and HF coil families also offer different frequency choices, so not every DEUS coil gives the same frequencies; we would always check the coil named on a DEUS configuration before planning around a frequency. The 11 inch (28 cm) X35 coil, XP reference D28X35, weighs 470 g (about 1 lb), against 345 g (12.2 oz) with coil cover for the 9 inch. See our wireless search coils.
XP quotes the DEUS run from the headphones with the 9 inch coil from 750 g (1.7 lb).
About the XP DEUS
What we like about the original XP DEUS is its exceptionally lightweight wireless construction, fast target response and extensive adjustment options. XP calls it "the first fully wireless detector", and it helped establish XP's reputation for wireless metal detectors: the coil sends its signal over XP's own digital radio link, without a coil cable, to the control unit, which is the remote control or XP's WS4 or WS5 headphones depending on the configuration. Adjustable Reactivity, selectable frequencies, detailed audio and discrimination settings and ground balance controls make the DEUS appealing to experienced detectorists.
One distinction matters before you buy. The original DEUS is a selectable single-frequency detector: it runs one frequency at a time. It does not use the simultaneous FMF multi-frequency technology found in XP's DEUS II, ICON and ICON-X.
Selectable frequencies on the XP DEUS
With an X35 coil the DEUS offers 35 frequencies from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz, and you choose one at a time. Frequency selection is one of the settings worth learning, and the frequencies available depend on the installed coil. XP's manual matches the lower frequencies to general use, coins, large masses and militaria, and the higher frequencies to small coins of any alloy, very fine coins and other low-conductivity targets. To avoid occasional interference, the manual says you can shift the operating frequency slightly, and it may be necessary to reduce sensitivity near power lines, fences or radio relays. No single frequency detects deeper or finds more targets in every situation, because target size, conductivity, orientation, ground mineralization and coil choice all influence the result.
Reactivity, discrimination and audio on iron-heavy sites
Picture an old farm field with iron nails and scattered brass relics. We would experiment with Reactivity and discrimination there while paying attention to short, repeatable non-ferrous signals. A good target can lie close to a nail, and when the coil passes over both objects their responses can interfere with one another. The DEUS cannot reliably detect every desirable target hidden among iron; iron masking remains a limitation.
- Reactivity: XP's term for how quickly the detector responds to nearby targets, and one of the settings we would learn first, along with ground balance, discrimination, audio response and frequency selection. XP's manual explains the trade-off: the greatest detection ranges come with low Reactivity on clean ground, swept slowly, while on mineralized ground medium or high levels find more targets and detect deeper. Near iron, a low level lets the iron signal last longer and can completely hide a ring beside it; a high level separates the ring from the iron.
- Discrimination: reducing discrimination lets more questionable signals be heard. XP's manual describes the Silencer as a filter that removes the crackling caused by ferrous targets.
- Audio: audio response is one of the settings worth learning. No tone identifies an object with certainty: a deep coin, rusty iron and other metal objects can all produce confusing responses.
Ground balance and factory programs
Ground balancing compensates for the ground's own electromagnetic response, and the DEUS offers tracking as well as a fixed ground balance. Ground balance is one of the settings we would learn early. XP's manual suggests staying in manual mode at level 90 for inland ground or dry sand, and notes that levels below 90 increase instability. Tracking may be useful where mineralization is fairly uniform, and may be unsuitable where ground conditions keep changing.
The DEUS comes with 10 factory programs (P1 to P10, from BASIC to GOLD FIELD in XP's list), and you can modify them and save 8 more user programs (P11 to P18).
Where the XP DEUS works well, and where it does not
Iron-contaminated historical sites, relic hunting and inland coin hunting are where the DEUS is most interesting, because its control over Reactivity, frequency and audio gives an experienced operator room to work difficult ground. See more relic and treasure metal detectors. For regular saltwater beach hunting we would recommend the XP DEUS II instead, because its FMF technology provides a more suitable platform. XP's manual notes that the seashore can range from magnetic black sand to electrically conductive salt water; on wet salt sand it suggests the Wet Beach program, Audio Response reduced to 0 or 1 and Reactivity raised to 4 for stability.
Water ratings differ by part. XP rates the 9 inch X35 coil fully waterproof up to 6 meters (20 feet). XP rates the WS5 headset showerproof and rainproof. In this configuration the WS5 headphones are the control unit and are not designed for full submersion, so the complete detector is not built for submersion.
Original XP DEUS or XP DEUS II
The DEUS II adds simultaneous FMF technology and a fully waterproof detector platform, along with additional audio and operating capabilities. For someone who regularly searches saltwater beaches or wants simultaneous multi-frequency operation, those differences may justify choosing the XP DEUS II. For wading or diving, XP rates the DEUS II coil IP68 to 20 meters (66 feet) and its remote to the same depth with the red cap fitted, while the WS5 that runs this DEUS is rainproof only.
XP DEUS wireless design, weight and charging
The wireless design and the light telescopic stem keep the DEUS light, there is no coil cable to catch on brush, and the detector collapses for transport. Light weight is about comfort and portability, not depth or target identification.
The coil and the headphones each carry their own lithium polymer battery. XP gives about 15 hours for the X35 coil, depending on frequency and power, about 22 hours for the headphones, and about 3 hours to charge them together. XP's manual says any certified 5 V USB charger of at least 1 A can charge the DEUS, and a 1 A charger handles the parts together. XP's MI-6 pinpointer pairs with the DEUS, and you hear its signals in your headset; see our XP pinpointers. XP rates operating and charging temperatures from 10 to 40 °C (50 to 104 °F).
One mistake to avoid with the XP DEUS
The mistake we warn about is confusing the original DEUS with the DEUS II.
Who we would recommend the XP DEUS to
We recommend the original XP DEUS to experienced coin and relic hunters who enjoy fine-tuning detector settings, particularly on iron-contaminated historical sites. Choose it when lightweight wireless operation and advanced single-frequency control are the priorities.
