The coil and WS6-ST module in this XP DEUS II WS6-ST Master
9 inch coil: the 22.5 cm (9 inch) FMF coil weighs 345 g, against 470 g for the 11 inch and 570 g for the 13 x 11 inch. In our experience its smaller footprint makes closely spaced targets easier to investigate on old homesites full of nails, and it is convenient around trees, foundations and confined areas.
WS6-ST module: the module clips to the headphones and has a 64 x 64 pixel screen, its own menus and USB-C charging, and you can unclip it and mount it on the stem if you would rather see the screen while you swing. XP quotes the WS6-ST Master from 750 g (1.65 lb) with the 9 inch coil counting the module only, and 810 g (1.79 lb) with the headphones, on the 305 g S-Telescopic Lite stem. Two parts need charging, the coil and the WS6-ST, whose 365 mAh battery runs about 15 hours and charges in about 3 hours. The WS6-ST is a stereo headset, so XP's stereo audio features run on it.
What the add-ons in this XP DEUS II WS6-ST Master bundle do
XP MI-6 pinpointer: the MI-6 pairs with the WS6-ST Master over the DEUS II's wireless link. The detector's non-motion pinpoint narrows the spot from the surface, and the handheld pinpointer locates the target in the loose soil once the hole is open. XP lists 12 kHz, Pulse or Pitch audio and 3 sensitivity levels, and rates the MI-6 water resistant to 6 meters (20 feet), with its own 2-year warranty. See our XP pinpointers.
XP Backpack 280: the backpack carries the detector and accessories to the site and keeps them together between hunts. With no coil cable on the DEUS II there is nothing to wind up when you pack it, and the S-Telescopic Lite stem folds down for the bag. See our XP carry bags, backpacks and cases.

About the XP DEUS II
What we like about the XP DEUS II is the way it combines XP's Fast Multi Frequency (FMF) simultaneous multi-frequency technology with exceptional light weight, fast target response and extensive audio customization. XP's wireless coil, remote and headphone ecosystem is a big part of its appeal to serious detectorists. We recommend it for demanding coin and relic hunting, when advanced audio, target separation and customization matter.
FMF processes several frequencies at the same time, which matters because different targets and ground conditions respond differently to different frequencies. The DEUS MONO program also runs any of 49 single frequencies from 4 to 45 kHz.
XP DEUS II programs and key settings
- Programs: 12 factory programs (General, Sensitive, Sensi FT, Fast, Park, Deep HC, DEUS MONO, Gold Field, Relic, Diving, Beach and Beach Sens) and 12 user slots for your own versions.
- Reactivity (9 levels, 0 to 5): XP's term for how quickly the detector responds to nearby targets. It is one of the settings we would learn first. Higher levels separate non-ferrous targets next to iron better and find more targets on mineralized ground, while the greatest detection range comes at low levels, which suit cleaner ground.
- Iron Volume (0 to 10): sets how loud iron targets sound; a low setting keeps iron audible but quieter, and 0 cuts iron off.
- Audio: PWM and SQUARE audio, Multi Tones from 1 to 5 plus Pitch and Full Tones, Audio Response from 0 to 7, a threshold from 0 to 20 and a 4-band equalizer on each audio output.
- Ground balance, sensitivity and interference: Tracking, Grab or Manual ground balance (Manual in DEUS MONO only), sensitivity from 0 to 99, and a frequency shift and automatic frequency scan. Near power lines, fences or radio-relay stations, run a frequency scan first, then reduce sensitivity.
Where the XP DEUS II works well, and where it does not
Picture a nineteenth-century farmhouse site with square nails scattered around an old foundation: we would start with the General or Sensitive program, then experiment with Reactivity and discrimination while listening carefully for repeatable non-ferrous responses between the iron signals. The DEUS II cannot see through every nail: at a low Reactivity level, iron is detected for longer and can completely hide a ring next to it. See more relic and treasure metal detectors. For regular saltwater beach hunting we recommend the DEUS II over the original XP DEUS, because FMF gives it a more suitable platform, and XP designed the Beach and Beach Sens programs for wet salt sand. On wet sand or in the surf, adjust Salt Sens rather than the general sensitivity. On magnetic ground such as black sand, deep targets may be masked, and heavily mineralized ground and electrical interference from high-voltage lines, transformers or electric fences still affect performance. See our beach metal detectors.
The DEUS II is not the right tool for everyone. For XP performance without the DEUS II's complexity, we would point you to the XP ICON or ICONX. For natural gold in relatively manageable ground, the XP ORX with an appropriate high-frequency coil is worth considering.
Water and the XP DEUS II WS6-ST Master
XP rates the FMF coil IP68 to 20 meters (66 feet), but the WS6-ST is rainproof only, and in the Master configuration it is the control unit. Rain, wet sand and spray are fine; wading where the headphones could go under, or diving, is not, so this is a land and beach setup. The MI-6 is water resistant to 6 meters (20 feet).
XP DEUS II wireless design and charging
XP's own digital radio in the 2.40 to 2.48 GHz band links the coil, the control unit and XP's wireless headphones, so there is no external coil cable. The coil and the control unit each have their own rechargeable battery: each FMF coil's 700 mAh battery runs 8 to 20 hours depending on program and frequency. XP's manual warns that opening the detector or changing a battery yourself voids the warranty.
One mistake to avoid with the XP DEUS II
The mistake we see most often is setting Reactivity and iron filtering too aggressively, then assuming every remaining response is a desirable target. Those adjustments can affect depth and target response. Raising the Silencer, for example, filters out the residual spikes of ferrous items, but it can also mask good targets close to them. Start with a factory program before changing advanced settings.
