Gold Prospecting Equipment by Method
Pick your method, then the gold prospecting gear and tools that go with it.
| Method | What it does | The gear | Shop |
| Panning | Samples a creek or wash by hand to show whether it holds gold | Gold pan with riffles, snuffer bottle, vials | Gold pans and kits |
| Classifying | Screens out rocks and sorts material by size | Classifiers and sifters in 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 inch mesh, buckets | Classifiers |
| Sluicing | Uses stream flow to wash light material over riffles and matting that trap gold | Sluice boxes, sluice mats | Sluice boxes and highbankers |
| Highbanking | Pumps water to a hopper and sluice so you can work gravel away from the stream | Highbankers, power sluices, pumps, hose, trommels | Sluice boxes and highbankers, Prospector's Dream |
| Dredging | Pulls gravel out of cracks and crevices under water | Hand dredges and suction tools | Dredges, crevice tools |
| Concentrate cleanup | Separates gold from the black sand left in your pan or sluice | Magnets, Blue Bowl, spiral wheels, Gold Cube | Blue Bowl, gold wheels, Gold Cube |
| Detecting | Finds nuggets in dry ground, on bedrock and in old tailings | Gold detector, pinpointer, pick | Gold detectors |
Gold Prospecting Kit: Starter Checklist
A first gold prospecting kit covers these tools and accessories:
- A gold pan with riffles
- A classifier that fits on a 5-gallon bucket
- A snuffer bottle and glass vials for fine gold
- A crevice tool and a shovel
- A magnet for black sand
Gold settles in cracks and crevices because it is heavy. A hook and spoon crevice tool loosens packed gravel with one end and scoops it out for your pan with the other, and long crevice tweezers pick small nuggets out of tight spots.
Gold Panning Equipment: Pans, Kits & Classifiers
Gold panning equipment is where most prospectors start. We recommend a 10 inch pan for sampling and learning to read material, and a 14 inch pan to move more dirt once you find a paying layer. Plastic pans are light for the pack and easier for beginners to read color against, while steel pans win on durability. Classifiers stack above the pan or bucket: 1/2 inch mesh handles bulk material, and 1/4 and 1/8 inch screens isolate the productive fraction. Find the rest of your gold panning supplies and gold panning accessories in gold pans and gold panning kits.
Sluice Boxes, Highbankers & Dredges
A sluice box processes far more gravel than a pan. It sits in the current and needs no pump, suiting a creek with steady flow. A highbanker adds a hopper and a pump that pulls water from the stream, so you can work benches and old high-water gravels away from the main channel. Power sluices combine the pump and a classifying deck in one portable unit. Prospector's Dream sluice boxes, highbankers and mats are in the products above; shop more in sluice boxes and highbankers and in our Prospector's Dream collection.
For cracks and crevices under water, the Gold-N-Sand X-Stream Hybrid Pro hand dredge is a non-motorized, fully submersible hand pump with a sniper nozzle, a bulk sand nozzle and a classifier nozzle that passes #8 mesh sand and smaller.
Gold Concentrators, Wheels & Cleanup Tools
A day on the sluice leaves black sand concentrate that still hides fine gold. A magnet pulls out most of the magnetite, since gold is not magnetic. A machine then finishes the job:
| Cleanup tool | How it works | Power and water | Size and capacity |
| Blue Bowl Concentrator | Water flows through the bowl; set up and run correctly, it recovers gold as fine as talcum powder | Kit with a 12-volt, 750 gallon per hour pump | About 5 lb; sits on a 5-gallon bucket with leg levelers |
| Gold Magic 12-U spiral wheel | Spiral riffles lift gold up the pan and drop it into the center cup | Built-in 12-volt battery, up to 16 hours per charge; runs wet or dry | 17 inch spiral pan; about 140 lb of material per hour |
| Camel Mining Desert Fox panning machine | Automatic panning wheel that works concentrates down far faster than a hand pan | 12 volt DC; 3 to 4 gallons of water | 12.5 inch wheel; 10 lb |
| Gold Cube 4 Stack | A water tray and 3 vortex trays force material under a gate so flat gold cannot float over | Runs on a water pump, in the creek or recirculating off site | 14 x 17 x 22 inch; 27 lb; feeds on 1/8 inch classified material |
Gold Prospecting vs. Gold Mining Equipment
Gold prospecting equipment finds and samples gold: pans, classifiers, small sluices and detectors. Gold mining equipment moves volume once you have found paying ground: highbankers, power sluices, trommels, hand dredges and cleanup machines. The gold mining equipment and gold mining supplies we carry are small-scale and portable for one prospector or a small crew; a Gold Cube fits in a car trunk.
Gold Detectors for Prospecting
A gold detector finds nuggets in dry washes and on bedrock where there is no water to pan or sluice. High-frequency VLF detectors such as the Minelab GOLD MONSTER 1000 suit small gold, and pulse induction detectors such as the Garrett Axiom and Minelab GPX 6000 reach deeper in mineralized ground. Shop them in gold detectors, and add a pinpointer from our pinpointers.
