Crackshot Snake Guardz are the original lightweight snake gaiters: leg guards that strap over your boots and calves so a rattlesnake or copperhead strike in tall grass hits a polycarbonate insert instead of you. They are penetration-tested to ASTM F1342-05, cover the leg to about 17.5 inches with a flap over the boot laces, and weigh 11 to 13 oz each, light enough that most detectorists forget they are wearing them. Crackshot makes them in the USA and backs them with a lifetime repair-or-replace warranty for non-commercial use.

Snake gaiters, snake guards or snake chaps: which do you need?

Gaiters like these cover ankle to just below the knee and are the right choice for metal detecting, hiking and yard work, where a snake strike lands low. If you push through brush above knee height or work in heavy snake country, Crackshot's Snake Chapz cover the full leg. Snake Guardz are the everyday option: cool, quick to put on and off, and they fit over ordinary boots. Wear them with leather boots or shoes; the gaiter protects the leg and the top of the foot, not the boot itself.

    Sizing: measure your calf

Measure around the largest part of your calf over the trousers you detect in, then pick the size from Crackshot's chart. If you are between sizes, go up; the two 1-inch straps with quick-release buckles take up slack.

    • Small: 6 to 9" calf (children roughly 4 to 7 years)
    • Medium: 9 to 14" calf (about 50 to 110 lb)
    • Large: 14 to 18" calf (about 110 to 200 lb)
    • X-Large: 18 to 23" calf (about 180 to 250 lb)
    • XX-Large: 23 to 30" calf (about 250 to 350 lb)
    • XXX-Large: 30 to 36" calf (about 350 to 500 lb)

What they are like in the field

The insert is rigid polycarbonate and acrylic sewn into 1000-denier nylon (green and camo) or polyester (orange), all with a DWR water-repellent coating so dew and venom bead off rather than soaking in. The design leaves an air gap between guard and leg, which is why they stay comfortable in summer where mesh-and-leather gaiters cook. The metatarsal flap over the laces is the detail that matters: a fang caught in a bootlace keeps the snake attached, and the flap keeps that from happening. Solid colours meet California's TB 117 flame-retardant standard; blaze orange doubles as hunter visibility during deer season. Pair them with the rest of our protective wear for ticks and thorns.

What size Crackshot Snake Guardz do I need?

Measure around the largest part of your calf over the trousers you wear in the field. Medium fits a 9 to 14 inch calf, Large 14 to 18, X-Large 18 to 23, XX-Large 23 to 30 and XXX-Large 30 to 36; Small (6 to 9 inch) is a children's size. Most adult men take Large or X-Large. If you are between sizes go up, since the two strap buckles take up the slack. Our Crackshot snake gaiters collection lists every size and colour we stock.

Do Crackshot Snake Guardz actually stop a rattlesnake bite?

They are penetration-tested to ASTM F1342-05, the standard for snake-bite protective clothing, using rigid polycarbonate and acrylic inserts inside the fabric, and they cover the leg to about 17.5 inches plus a flap over the boot laces. No gaiter is a guarantee against every strike, but this is the protection standard the US Border Patrol and Forest Service specify. Wear them with proper boots; the gaiter protects the leg and instep, not the boot. See the rest of our protective wear for brush and tick protection.

    Answered by Richard T. · September 2026

Are Snake Guardz hot to wear in summer?

Less than most. Each gaiter weighs 11 to 13 oz and the design leaves an air gap between the guard and your leg, so they run cooler than leather or mesh-lined gaiters that sit against the skin. The nylon and polyester shells have a water-repellent coating, so morning dew does not soak in. For full-leg cover in heavy snake country, Crackshot Snake Chapz are warmer but cover above the knee. Both are in our metal detecting clothing collection.
