The Minelab SDC 2300 runs full sensitivity in highly mineralized goldfields where single-frequency VLF machines signal-blank or produce constant false alerts. Detectorists moving from the Gold Monster 1000 or any VLF setup notice the shift immediately: sub-gram nuggets that sat silent under maximum VLF sensitivity register as clear, repeatable signals, because MPF Pulse Induction technology samples target response after the transmit pulse has decayed. It folds to 40 cm (15.7 in), fits in a standard backpack, and submerges to 3 m (10 ft) without disassembly or waterproofing adapters.

What the SDC 2300 Adds Coming from a VLF Machine

    • Sensitivity holds in mineralized ground. PI operation maintains detection depth in ironstone-heavy and oxidized goldfields. VLF machines in this terrain back off sensitivity to suppress ground noise. The SDC 2300 runs at full settings through the same ground conditions.
    • Sub-gram gold becomes reliably detectable. MPF PI targets fine gold and small nuggets below the detection threshold of VLF machines in red-ground goldfields, including areas already searched with other detectors.
    • Ground conditions are handled automatically. Normal mode covers standard goldfield terrain with automatic ground tracking. Salt mode handles coastal and salt-rich environments. No manual ground balance is required in the field.
    • The detector goes where large-shaft machines cannot. At 40 cm (15.7 in) collapsed and 2.3 kg (5.1 lbs), it fits narrow gullies, dense scrub, cramped creek beds, and carry-on luggage for remote goldfield trips.
    • Water detecting requires no equipment swap. The 8" Monoloop coil is waterproof to 3 m (10 ft). Move from dry ground to creek bed without changing machines or adding waterproofing covers.

Prospectors evaluating the next step up in Minelab's gold PI lineup can compare the Minelab GPX 6000 alongside the SDC 2300.

The Minelab SDC 2300 in the Field

    Dense Bush and Remote Goldfields

Carrying a full-size detector into remote terrain means trading reach for portability before you even begin detecting. The SDC 2300 collapses to 40 cm and deploys to 150 cm (59.1 in) with no assembly steps. Normal mode and automatic ground tracking handle varying mineralization across a patch without repeated manual adjustment, keeping detection continuous rather than interrupted by ground balance resets.

    • Mode: Normal
    • Sensitivity: 3 (increase to 4 on stable, low-mineral ground)
    • Noise Cancel: Auto; run once before starting, repeat if EMI increases
    • Ground Balance: Auto (automatic tracking active)
    • Threshold: 4

    Highly Mineralized Desert Goldfields

Red, oxidized ground and high-magnetite zones are where PI performance separates from VLF results. VLF machines in this terrain require sensitivity reductions to suppress ground signals, which pulls fine gold below detection threshold. MPF samples the receive window after the transmit pulse decays, maintaining sensitivity to small gold independent of ground mineral content. Start at Sensitivity 2 in aggressive red ground and increase only if the ground reads stable with no false alerts.

    • Mode: Normal
    • Sensitivity: 2
    • Noise Cancel: Auto
    • Ground Balance: Auto
    • Threshold: 3

    Riverbeds and Shallow Creek Beds

Creek beds concentrate fine gold behind boulders and in bedrock cracks, but variable black sand and magnetic minerals generate false signals in VLF machines even at reduced sensitivity. Salt Mode is designed for conductive environments, with sensitivity adjustable from 1 to 3. The 8" Monoloop coil enters the water directly, rated to 3 m (10 ft) submersion, with no additional sealing required.

    • Mode: Salt
    • Sensitivity: 2
    • Noise Cancel: Auto; run before entering water
    • Ground Balance: Auto
    • Threshold: 3

    How MPF Technology Works

MPF stands for Multi Period Fast, Minelab's PI architecture in the SDC 2300. Standard PI operation transmits a magnetic pulse then opens a receive window to detect target response. The problem for gold detection is residual transmit energy bleeding into the receive window, masking response from low-conductivity targets like fine gold.

MPF cycles transmit and receive at ultra-fast intervals. Each transmit pulse decays rapidly before the receive window opens, reducing residual interference to the point where the SDC 2300 detects sub-gram gold that sits below the effective range of VLF machines working the same mineralized ground.

The SDC 2300 does not provide numeric target ID. PI technology produces target information through audio response: soft, low tones indicate small or deep targets; loud, high tones indicate larger or shallower ones. Nine LED indicators add a visual layer showing detection response, battery status, and threshold setting. Prospectors comparing PI and VLF performance across terrain types can read our gold detector buying guide for the practical performance differences.

    Build, Controls, and Audio

The SDC 2300 weighs 2.3 kg (5.1 lbs) and extends to 150 cm (59.1 in). The full carbon-fibre shaft is a single folding unit that deploys in seconds with no tools and no assembly steps. Build materials are tested to military standards, relevant in rocky and abrasive terrain where lighter shaft construction fails. Controls are minimal: a sensitivity dial and a Noise Cancel button. Ground balance runs automatically. There is no screen and no menu to step through.

Audio options include the built-in speaker, the included SDC 2300 wired headphones via the waterproof 6-pin jack, Koss waterproof headphones (optional), and the Pro-Sonic wireless audio transmitter (optional). Wireless audio is not built into the machine; the Pro-Sonic accessory adds it. The included Li-Ion pack delivers up to 8 hours of runtime; four C-Type alkaline batteries work as a field backup. For precise target recovery in rocky creek substrate where the coil cannot pinpoint below loose material, a Minelab pinpointer tightens the dig zone significantly.

    Coil Options

The 8" Round Monoloop is the only officially supported coil for this detector. Monoloop configuration is standard for PI gold detectors in mineralized terrain, providing consistent sensitivity to small targets and efficient ground coverage. The 8" diameter fits into rock crevices and creek gaps where larger coils lose maneuverability.

Minelab has not released additional certified coil sizes for this model. We do not stock third-party coils for the SDC 2300; running an unsupported coil voids the manufacturer warranty and may affect detection performance.
