The Vortex Reaper is the large elliptical coil in Garrett's Vortex line, a 14" x 11" double-D built for covering ground quickly. It is the coil you reach for when the site is open and the targets are spread thin: pasture, cut fields, plowed ground, wide beach. When the Stock Coil Is the Better Choice

This is not an upgrade for every site, and it is worth being honest about that before you spend the money. A bigger coil sees a wider patch of ground at once, and that is exactly what works against you in cluttered soil: two targets close together are more likely to read as one, and a trashy park or an old homestead will hand you more masked signals than the stock coil does. Open ground is the whole case for this coil. On a cut field or a stretch of dry beach the limiting factor is not sensitivity, it is how many square feet you can cover before the light goes, and a quarter more ground per sweep compounds across a full day. The same width helps on cache hunting, where the target is large, likely deep, and the search area is measured in acres rather than square yards.

At 19.6 ounces the Reaper is heavy enough to notice on a long hunt but light enough that most detectorists run it all day without a harness. It is fully submersible with a waterproof connector, so shallow water and surf are fair game, though the limit is always your detector's own rating rather than the coil's.
