The Garrett 6" x 11" DD Viper is the narrow coil for the Vortex series, and it is the one to fit when the stock 8.5" x 11" Raider is too wide for the site: nail-choked homesteads, tot lots, tree roots and rocks, and any park where good targets sit inches from trash. It plugs straight into the Vortex VX5, VX7 and VX9 with the same waterproof connector, and it is fully submersible, so it goes to the beach and the creek with the detector.

Viper, Raider or Reaper: which Vortex coil do you need?

All three are DD coils built for the Vortex. The Raider (8.5" x 11") ships with most Vortex packages and is the all-round choice. The Viper (6" x 11") gives up a little depth and coverage for target separation: its narrow footprint sees less ground on each pass, so it picks a coin out from between two nails that the Raider would blend into one signal, and it fits between roots and along fence lines. The Reaper (14" x 11") goes the other way, covering open fields fast and reaching deeper on big targets. Most Vortex owners end up with the Raider on the machine and the Viper in the bag for trashy days. See the full Garrett Vortex VX9 range for the detectors and all three coils.

What the Viper does in the field

Because it is a DD, the detection field is a narrow blade running the length of the coil rather than a cone, which is what gives the clean separation in iron and the stable behaviour in mineralised ground. Multi-Flex multi-frequency on the Vortex works exactly the same through the Viper as through the Raider, so you keep Iron Audio, Iron Volume and the full target ID range. Expect a small loss of depth on coin-sized targets compared with the Raider, and slower ground coverage, which is the trade you make for recovering the targets other coils mask. The coil is waterproof and the connector seals, so rinse it in fresh water after salt and it is good for the next hunt. Fit the included cover for gravel and rock. Compare it against every metal detector search coil we stock, or the other elliptical coils in the range.

Which Garrett detectors is the Viper coil compatible with?

The Viper coil is compatible exclusively with the Garrett Vortex series, including the Vortex VX5, VX7, and VX9 models. Garrett engineered this search coil series specifically for the Vortex platform, meaning it will not work with legacy models such as the AT Pro, AT Max, or Ace series. The waterproof connector is designed to mate directly onto your Vortex control unit without the need for extra adapters or aftermarket modifications.

How does the 6x11 Viper compare to the stock 8.5x11 Raider coil?

The oversized Reaper 14" x 11" coil focuses on raw depth and broad ground coverage, delivering noticeably deeper detection on medium and large targets in clean soil. In contrast, the Viper prioritizes surgical target separation and maneuverability. If you are hunting open fields for deep caches or old coins, the Reaper is the superior choice. However, if you are working iron-infested homesteads or tight spaces between roots and rocks, the Viper's narrow profile will yield more hidden, recoverable targets by breaking through iron masking.

Can I submerge the Viper coil in saltwater?

The Garrett 6" x 11" DD Viper coil is fully submersible and can be used in saltwater environments including coastal shallows, ocean beaches, and tidal zones. The waterproof housing and connector seal protect internal electronics when the coil is submerged in lakes, streams, or saltwater. After saltwater use, rinse the coil and connector with fresh water to prevent salt buildup and maintain long-term reliability.

What's the detection depth difference between the Viper and the 14x11 Reaper coil?

The Reaper's 14-inch width delivers noticeably deeper detection on medium and large targets compared to the Viper. The Viper prioritizes target separation and maneuverability over raw depth, so you'll sacrifice some depth gain in exchange for better performance in trashy sites. If you're hunting open fields for caches or deep silver, the Reaper is the better choice. If you're working iron-infested parks or tight spaces between roots and rocks, the Viper's focused field and narrow profile give you more recoverable targets.

Does the Viper coil come with a protective cover?

The Viper ships with a 6x11 protective coil cover that guards the coil face against scratches when you're sweeping gravel, rocks, and rough terrain. The cover stays secure during normal swinging and protects the coil from damage in areas with sharp rocks or construction debris. We run the cover on every hunt to extend coil life. The cover adds minimal weight and doesn't interfere with detection depth or sensitivity.

Will the Viper coil work in high-mineralization ground?

The Viper handles mineralized soil efficiently when paired with the advanced frequency options of the Garrett Vortex series. Its DD configuration and narrow, focused detection field naturally reduce the volume of ground minerals the coil sees at any single moment, which helps minimize false signals from hot rocks and heavy iron oxides. Adjusting your detector's manual or automatic ground balance to match localized soil conditions will ensure optimal stability and clear target identification when running premium systems like the flagship Vortex VX9 or the versatile mid-tier Vortex VX7 configurations.

    Answered by John W. · May 2026

How much does the Viper coil weigh compared to the stock Raider?

The Viper weighs just over 1 pound. The Raider coil weight is not specified in available documentation, so a direct comparison cannot be confirmed. The Viper's narrower profile shifts the balance point slightly forward, which some hunters find more comfortable during long sessions. The reduced swing weight makes it easier to maintain a consistent height over uneven ground, and the lighter coil reduces arm fatigue when you're working tight spaces that require frequent direction changes.

Can I use the Viper coil for gold prospecting?

The Viper's narrow 6-inch width and focused DD field make it highly effective for targeting gold jewelry in parks, beaches, and trashy areas where target separation is critical. Its physical shape allows you to maneuver tightly between rocky crevices and iron clutter to isolate targets. If you are using your system for prospecting gold jewelry in recreation areas, this setup excels.
