The last step of panning, made simple
You have worked a pan down to a spoonful of black sand and a scatter of color, and now the fiddly part starts. Fingers push flakes around without picking them up, and tipping the pan to pour off water risks washing the day's gold back into the creek. A gold snuffer bottle solves it in one motion: squeeze the air out, put the tip beside the flake, and let go. The vacuum draws the gold and a little water straight up into the bottle, where you can see it. Prospectors call the same tool a snuffer bottle, a sniffer bottle or a snifter bottle, and at 3 oz this is the size most panners settle on.
Is the 3 oz the size you want?
Not for everyone, and it is worth being straight about that. The 3 oz holds a full day of flakes for hand panning and still drops into a shirt pocket, which is why it is the one we reach for most. If you run a sluice box or a concentrator and clean up a lot of concentrate in one sitting, the 4 oz bottle saves you emptying it mid-session. If you hike long distances with minimal kit, a 2 oz is lighter and takes up less room. Capacity is the only meaningful difference between them in use, so choose by how much material you process rather than by price.
Using it in the pan
A snuffer bottle comes into play at the very end, once you have panned down to fine gold sitting against black sand. Leave a shallow film of water in the pan so the flakes stay submerged and mobile. Squeeze the bottle firmly to push the air out, hold the squeeze, bring the tip down to within a fraction of an inch of the gold, then release slowly. Releasing slowly matters: a fast release kicks up a swirl of sand and you end up with more black sand than color in the bottle. Work one flake or small cluster at a time rather than sweeping across the pan.
Two habits save gold over a season. First, snuffer the pan twice, because the first pass almost always leaves flakes stuck to the plastic. Second, keep the bottle upright once material is in it, since the tip is open and gold will run back out if you lay it down. If you are still building your panning technique, our complete guide to panning for gold covers the stages that come before this one, and it pairs naturally with a properly riffled pan from our gold pans and panning kits range.
Beyond the creek
The same suction is useful well away from prospecting. It lifts a dropped screw out of a carpet, clears swarf from a drilled hole, picks small parts off a workshop bench, and pulls solder beads out of an electronics tray. Plenty of customers buy a second one purely for the garage.
