The Garrett Axiom 16" x 14" Mono search coil is the largest coil in the Axiom lineup, and it is the one to reach for when depth and ground coverage matter more than anything else. It fits the Garrett Axiom pulse induction detector only, and it suits prospectors working wide-open goldfields and relic hunters covering large fields where the targets left behind are the deep ones.
Is the 16" x 14" Mono the right Axiom coil for you?
Be honest about your ground before buying this one. A mono coil gives the greatest detection depth in most soil conditions, but the Axiom's Iron Check feature does not work with mono coils. If you hunt iron-heavy sites and rely on Iron Check to skip nails, you want the Garrett Axiom 16" x 14" DD coil instead. Garrett also states that its DD-FC coils out-perform mono coils on small gold nuggets, so if your patch produces sub-gram gold, a smaller DD coil is the better tool and this coil is a poor match. The 16" x 14" Mono earns its place when you are chasing larger, deeper nuggets or caches in open ground, or when you need to cover acreage quickly to find where the gold actually is.
How the large mono coil behaves in the field
A 16 inch (41 cm) by 14 inch (36 cm) footprint sweeps far more ground per pass than the 11" x 7" coil that ships with the detector, which is why prospectors use it for scouting new ground and for gridding known patches at depth. Because it is a mono coil, the detection field is a single broad cone rather than the narrow blade of a DD, so sweep slowly and overlap passes to avoid missing targets between swings. The coil is a solid, closed design rather than an open web. Garrett notes two practical benefits: the solid shell resists impact when you glide or scrub over rocks and brush, and the flat front half of the coil gives you a surface to spread a handful of dirt on when sifting for a small nugget. Expect more swing weight than the stock coil; a harness or bungee is a reasonable pairing for a full day.
Set-up and ground balance procedures for the Axiom are covered in our Garrett Axiom setup guide. Rebalance after swapping to this coil, since the larger footprint sees more ground.
