The Minelab V8X is an 8x5 elliptical waterproof DD search coil engineered as a high-performance upgrade for tighter target separation in iron-heavy sites. Whether you are swinging a Minelab X-Terra Pro, X-Terra Elite, or a Vanquish V60 series detector, this coil is designed for environments where standard round stock coils struggle. It allows detectorists to thread between iron nails, hot rocks, and surface trash without losing critical depth on desirable coins and relics. The narrow elliptical footprint provides exceptional maneuverability around physical obstacles, while the classic Double-D configuration ensures stable ground balancing across heavily mineralized soil.

What's Included with the Minelab V8X Coil

    • Minelab V8X 8x5 waterproof DD search coil
    • Direct-fit mounting hardware for quick installation
    • Fitted protective skid plate

High-Performance Separation for Minelab VLF & Multi-IQ Platforms

    • Advanced Target Isolation: The 8x5 elliptical geometry creates a razor-sharp detection footprint that slices through dense trash fields, unmasking coins and jewelry resting right next to iron junk.
    • Fully Submersible Build: Waterproof construction delivers total reliability when wading down shallow creek beds, searching riverbanks, or scanning wet beach sand.
    • Stable Ground Performance: The specialized DD configuration mitigates ground noise and heavy mineralization, keeping your threshold steady and target IDs reliable.
    • Rugged Surface Protection: The included, field-replaceable skid plate safeguards the delicate coil housing against impacts from sharp rocks, roots, and abrasive gravel.
    • Seamless System Integration: Designed as a quick-swap upgrade utilizing Minelab's streamlined connector style for plug-and-play setup across compatible detector lines.

Optimized Field Performance Across Diverse Environments

    Old Homesteads and Foundation Hunting

Debris-choked historical sites demand precision over raw size. The V8X footprint excels at operating inside tight crawl spaces, cellar holes, and stone foundations saturated with hand-forged square iron nails and building rubble. By compressing the electromagnetic field laterally, this coil lets you sweep right alongside iron masking sources, pulling clear non-ferrous high tones from deep within contaminated soil profiles.

    Trashy Parks and Coinflipping Grounds

Modern public parks are notoriously littered with aluminum foil, pull tabs, and steel bottle caps. While a massive 12-inch coil scans multiple targets simultaneously—resulting in mixed, confusing signals—the V8X allows you to isolate singular targets with surgical precision. This tight control minimizes target masking and gives your detector's recovery speed an immense advantage, helping you confidently pick out deep silver dimes from clusters of shallow trash. Understanding metal detector technologies like DD geometry helps you optimize your setup for these high-trash park environments.

Creek Beds, Streams, and Eroded Waterways

Relics naturally collect in low-lying gravel bars and moving water channels. Because the V8X is completely waterproof, you can submerge the entire lower stem configuration directly into fast-moving creeks and mountain streams. Its low-profile, hydrodynamic design cuts through water resistance easily compared to broad round coils, reducing arm fatigue. The included skid plate helps the coil glide seamlessly across slippery river rocks, gravel beds, and clay bars without snagging or falsing.

How it Compares to the Minelab X-Terra & V60 Coil Lineup

Choosing the correct coil configuration depends entirely on specific site conditions and target density rather than raw depth alone.

Which Minelab detectors does the V8X fit?

The V8X uses the X-series coil connector shared by the X-Terra Pro, X-Terra Elite, and the newer Vanquish 360, 460, and 560. It does not fit the original Vanquish 340, 440, or 540, which use the V8, V10, and V12 coils with a different connector, and it is not the right coil for the Equinox series. If you own an X-Terra or a V60-series Vanquish, this is the smallest coil available for it and the first one we recommend for trashy parks and old homesteads. How much depth do I lose going from the stock V12X to the V8X?

On a clean-ground coin at depth you'll give up some reach, which is why the V8X is a site-specific coil rather than a full-time replacement. Where it wins is in iron and aluminum trash: the 12x9 stock coil sees several targets at once and blends them, while the 8x5 footprint isolates each one so the target ID stays readable. Most of our customers run the V12X first, then go back over the productive area with the V8X to pull out masked targets. The stock coil is sold separately as the Minelab V12X coil if you ever need a replacement.

Is the V8X waterproof enough for beach and creek hunting?

Yes. The V8X is fully waterproof and rated for the same depth as the detector it's attached to, which is 16 feet on the X-Terra Pro, X-Terra Elite, and Vanquish 360/460/560. Wet sand, surf wash, and creek wading are all fine, and the narrow elliptical shape moves through water with less drag than a round coil. Rinse the coil and connector in fresh water after salt sessions. Detectors built for the same conditions are in our beach metal detectors collection.

Does the V8X come with a coil cover?

Yes. A fitted skid plate ships in the box along with the mounting hardware, so the coil is ready to bolt on and hunt. The skid plate takes the abrasion from gravel, roots, and rock so the coil housing doesn't, and it's replaceable when it eventually wears through. Keep it on full-time; a cracked coil housing is not a warranty item, a worn skid plate is a few dollars. Replacement plates and other coil accessories are in our metal detector search coils collection.

Do I need to change settings after fitting the V8X?

The X-Terra and Vanquish detectors recognize the coil automatically, so there's no calibration menu to run. What you should do after every coil change is Noise Cancel and, on the X-Terra models, a fresh ground balance, since the smaller coil reads the ground differently than the 12x9. Many users also raise sensitivity a notch or two because the small coil is more stable near iron and in EMI. If you're pairing the V8X with the V12X for a two-coil kit, the Minelab Vanquish 560 Pro Pack ships both coils and a pinpointer together.

    Answered by Dan P. · September 2026

When should I pick the V8X over the V10X?

Pick the V8X when the site is choked with iron or aluminum, or physically tight: cellar holes, foundations, tot lots, and around playground equipment. Its 8x5 footprint separates targets that the V10X would blend, and it fits between obstacles a 10x7 can't. Pick the V10X when you want a single all-around coil that keeps most of the stock coil's depth while improving separation a little. Many X-Terra owners end up with both and swap based on the day's ground. Compare the middle option on the Minelab V10X coil page.
