The Minelab X-TERRA Pro gives you something most detectors in this price range cannot: the ability to manually select your operating frequency and take a fully submersible machine into the water. Coming off a fixed-frequency VLF, that shift changes what you can target, where you can hunt, and how cleanly your machine handles mineralized or trashy ground. The Minelab X-TERRA Pro is built around PRO-SWITCH frequency control, IP68 submersion rated to 5 meters, and six search mode profiles that give intermediate detectorists room to grow without a steep learning curve.
What You Gain Coming from a Single-Frequency Machine
- Manual frequency selection in Park and Field: instead of being locked to one frequency, you choose from 5, 10, or 15 kHz to match your target type and soil. Beach mode locks to 8 kHz, which is optimized for high-salt ground where single-frequency machines typically struggle most.
- Full IP68 submersion to 5 meters (16 ft): not splash-resistant, not moisture-protected -- fully waterproof. You can swing through the surf zone, wade a shallow stream, or recover a target in standing water without hesitation.
- Finer target ID resolution: 119 target ID segments (ferrous -19 to 0, non-ferrous 1-99) paired with 30 discrimination segments give you notch accuracy that most entry-level machines cannot deliver. You can notch out pull-tabs and foil while still accepting coins that fall in the same conductivity band.
- Five audio modes: 1-tone, 2-tone, 5-tone, All Tones (AT), and Depth mode let you tune your audio to the terrain. Depth mode shifts the audio response to reflect how deep the signal is, not just what it is -- useful in sites where target depth is as important as target type.
- Ferrous volume and ferrous vibration controls: set iron audio at a lower volume than your good targets so you hear the difference before you dig, and toggle handgrip vibration independently for silent low-light hunts where audio is not practical.

The Minelab X-TERRA Pro in the Field
Park and Coin Hunting
Heavily hunted parks mix bottle caps, pull-tabs, iron, and foil within centimeters of good coins. At 15 kHz, the X-TERRA Pro separates a dime from adjacent iron at a few inches, and the 30 discrimination segments give you enough notch range to keep mid-conductors open without accepting aluminum scrap.
- Mode: Park 1 (general) or Park 2 (saved high-trash pattern)
- Frequency: 15 kHz (coins, jewelry) or 10 kHz (balanced)
- Sensitivity: 16-20 (back off in high-EMI environments)
- Ground Balance: Auto or Tracking
- Discrimination: Accept non-ferrous 1-99, reject ferrous
- Ferrous Volume: 2-4 (keep iron audio low but audible)
Beach and Water Hunting
Wet saltwater sand creates ground noise that forces sensitivity cuts on single-frequency machines, masking shallow targets. The X-TERRA Pro's Beach mode locks to 8 kHz, calibrated for high-mineral, high-salt ground. IP68 submersion to 5 meters covers the surf zone, wet sand, and shallow water recovery with the same machine.
- Mode: Beach 1 (standard salt) or Beach 2 (heavy mineralization)
- Frequency: 8 kHz (fixed in Beach mode)
- Sensitivity: 12-17 in wet salt; push higher in dry sand
- Ground Balance: Auto or Tracking
- Discrimination: Accept full non-ferrous range (1-99); let Beach mode manage ground noise
- Ferrous Vibration: On for silent surf-zone work
Relic Hunting in Fields
Plowed fields and homestead sites have variable mineralization and deep targets. Lower frequencies push deeper on large conductive targets -- big silver, brass buttons, belt hardware. At 5 kHz the X-TERRA Pro produces a stronger signal on high-surface-area objects at depth, and Field mode profiles give a clean discrimination baseline for unimproved land.
- Mode: Field 1 or Field 2
- Frequency: 5 kHz (large deep targets) or 10 kHz (general)
- Sensitivity: 18-23 (adjust per ground noise)
- Ground Balance: Manual (set before sweep) or Tracking
- Discrimination: Accept 20+ to start; open lower as ground stabilizes
- Ferrous Volume: 1 (minimal iron audio to stay focused on good signals)
PRO-SWITCH Frequency Technology
PRO-SWITCH is a single-frequency selection system, not a simultaneous multi-frequency technology. The difference matters practically: you choose one frequency per hunt based on your target and terrain, and the machine runs that single frequency cleanly without the processing trade-offs that come with transmitting several frequencies at once. In Park and Field modes, you select from 5 kHz, 10 kHz, or 15 kHz. Beach mode fixes the frequency at 8 kHz, which Minelab has tuned for saltwater ground conditions.
Lower frequencies (5 kHz) penetrate soil more deeply and respond more strongly to high-conductivity targets like large silver and iron relics. Higher frequencies (15 kHz) increase sensitivity to small gold, fine jewelry, and thin coins. On a fixed-frequency machine that trade is set at the factory. On the Minelab X-TERRA Pro, you make it per hunt. Noise Cancel is automatic, reading EMI at startup and adjusting the machine's own channel without any manual input.

Build, Display, and Audio
The X-TERRA Pro runs 1.3 kg (2.9 lbs) and collapses to 63 cm (25 inches) -- it fits in a standard backpack. Extended length reaches 138 cm (54 inches) across the three-piece shaft. The control pod carries a built-in LED flashlight, and the LCD display uses a red monochrome backlight alongside a red-backlit keypad, so low-light and pre-dawn hunts are workable without a headlamp. Handgrip vibration is configurable independently for ferrous and non-ferrous signals, which gives you tactile target feedback when audio is not an option.
Audio ships with a built-in speaker standard. The 3.5mm wired headphone jack sits behind a waterproof cap; low-latency wireless audio is also supported (headphones sold separately). All five audio modes are accessible from the main screen. We recommend pairing the X-TERRA Pro with a pinpointer for fast, precise target recovery in hard soil or sand. If you're still comparing options before buying, our Vanquish 560 vs X-TERRA Pro guide breaks down the key differences.
Coil Options
The included V12X 12"x9" Double-D Elliptical handles most detecting conditions well. DD designs manage mineralized ground better than concentric coils, and the 12"x9" footprint balances coverage with target separation in trashy sites. For dense iron infill or tight urban parks, the optional V8X 8"x5" Double-D Elliptical gives sharper response and more precise pinpointing in exchange for sweep width. The optional V10X 10"x7" Double-D Elliptical is the middle option for sites where the standard coil is too large but you still want reasonable ground coverage. The X-TERRA Pro is also compatible with the full Equinox series coil lineup.
